Welcome to Class 2Y1
2Y1 Autumn 2
We began the school Year thinking about ‘Crazy Climates’ and learnt a lot about all the continents. We enjoyed packing our cases and visiting the different places. We have tried some different foods, explored customs and traditions, looked at different landmarks and thought about what it might be like to live in a different place. We have also looked at where we live and worked hard improving our map skills and general knowledge about Europe.
This half term we are exploring the life and times of William the Conqueror. We have visited York Castle Museum to experience what Castle Life was like. We handled artefacts from many years ago and tried on different costumes. We also used smelling blocks to experience how the castle may have smelt. We looked at Clifford’s Tower and saw how it would have looked when it was first built by William the Conqueror in 1068/9. We are currently working on producing our class activity book on the topic and have generated some fantastic ideas.
We have been getting used to working in our new Literacy groups and are using our skills in all areas of the curriculum. We have looked at the author Julia Donaldson and have been to the Town Hall during the Into Film Festival to watch The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child. We were also shown how the films were animated – looking at the different steps it takes.
We spent some time on Remembrance Day thinking about what happened and why we ‘Remember’. We discussed why we wear poppies and completed our 2 minutes silence taking time to reflect and think about on all those lost to war. We made our own poppies to help us remember.
We have been working very hard and following Our School and Class Rules. We have enjoyed putting our Reward Leaves on the school tree and Friday Reward time. We have been thinking about how we can be fantastic friends.
This half term our topic in Year 2 is ‘The Aztecs’.
The Aztecs lived in the country we now call Mexico, Central America. It is a hot place full of deserts, volcanoes and mountains. We will explore the History and culture, building a timeline of events. We will be comparing their lives to our own. We will be finding out about Aztec life, beliefs and tradition. We will be looking at their buildings and using Design and Technology to recreate a building in Leeds in the Aztec style. We will try Mexican foods and create our own recipes. We will look at the Aztec Gods and create some of our own. The Aztecs were some of the first people to make chocolate so we will be thinking about how it is made and trying and testing - for educational purposes of course
In Science we will be exploring materials and their properties and also looking at how we can change materials. This will link to our work in Art where we will be exploring how we can use different materials to create Art. We will also be looking at Aztec patterns and designs.
