SUMMER 2

The children have enjoyed a very busy first week back and have already started to research information about the Ancient Egyptians for our latest topic, ‘The Carnival’.   During our studies we will explore the life and times of the people who lived long ago in our chosen country of Egypt.  We will be thinking about the music, dancing, games and food they experienced and create our own versions of these to share on our whole school Carnival Day, which will take place in July.   As part of these celebrations the children will design and make a float for the parade based on our shared ideas.

The children are continuing to work very hard to achieve their targets in Maths and Literacy and should  feel very proud of their achievements so far.

Science

Our science topic this half term is focussed on Humans and Other Animals.  We will be carrying out a variety of scientific investigations and furthering our understanding of how to complete a fair test.

PE and Games

Our PE days are Tuesday and Wednesday and children will need a PE kit consisting of t-shirt and shorts for these sessions.

A number of children have reached fifty house points and more and are looking forward to receiving their well-deserved prizes.   They will then work towards the next target of one hundred points before the end of term.

We would like to thank you for your support throughout the year.

Mrs McGowan, Mrs Dixon, Mrs Jarvis and Mrs Boyd.

The staff in 2Y3 would like to welcome everyone back for the Summer term in Year 2.  The children have been introduced to our new behaviour policy as well as the structure of the rewards and consequences section.  They are very excited and eager to attain House Points for themselves and their own street team.  As we all now know – points mean prizes!  They are also enjoying their special reward time at the end of each day because they have remained on green or achieved yellow for going that extra mile.

Areas of study

Read, Write Inc. (Phonics and Literacy)

The children are continuing to make super progress in their Read Write Inc groups and may be re-grouped again this half term.  Some children wil move from Read Write Inc to studying Language and Literacy.

Creative

This term in year 2 we are studying the Aztec civilisation as part of our latest whole school topic named Colossal Cultures.  The children have been inspired to design and create a replacement building of the Parkinson Building (Leeds University) during the topic and have already begun to put their ideas on paper.  They will go on to use a variety of materials and methods to create a final ‘Colossal Structure’ based on an Aztec design.  During our first week the children have enjoyed a taste of Aztec life whilst making Aztec jewellery, tasting authentic Mexican and Aztec foods and using their imaginations to create their own Aztec Gods.  I have posted a link below for a taste of the Aztecs to savour.

Science

Our science topic is Changing Materials and allows us to create solid links to our topic work.  We will be exploring a variety of materials, their uses and how they have can be changed from their original state.  We are looking forward to thinking of and creating experiments that involve changing the state of a material, from solid to liquid and back again.

Welcome to Class 2Y3!

Dear Parents

Welcome to 2Y3.

Staff working in 2Y3 are Mrs McGowan (class teacher), Mrs Jarvis and Mrs Dixon.  We are also very fortunate to have Mrs Boyd who joins us on Thursday mornings and Friday afternoons as a volunteer helper.

The children have settled well into Year 2 and are working hard across the curriculum.  Last week Year 2 enjoyed a morning trip to Leeds Town Hall to watch The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child.  This included a short presentation of how the animation films were created.

Areas of study

On Friday, we visited York Castle museum, to support our Autumn 2 topic, Royals and Rebels.  Our focus for the topic is William the Conqueror.  The children will be learning of the life and times of the influential King.   At the end of the topic, the children will create an activity booklet based upon their own learning and research.

In Science the children will learn about sound through practical observation.  By the end of the topic they will know that we hear using our ears and be able to name a variety of sources of sound.  They will begin to recognise that sounds get fainter as the distance from the sound source increases.

Reading books

Reading will be changed as often as possible, usually on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.  The children are expected to empty their own book bags and place their book and signed reading record in the box provided.

Please ensure that you read with your child as often as possible, so that we can change their book regularly. It is important that parents and carers support children’s development in reading by reading with them on a daily basis.

Homework

The children will receive homework on Fridays and will be based on themes and topics they are learning about at school.  Homework will be collected the following Thursday.

PE kitsIMPORTANT

Please note that the children should have an indoor and an outdoor PE kit in school at all times. Your child’s indoor kit should consist of shorts and a t-shirt. During colder weather, children will need a t-shirt, jogging bottoms and a sweatshirt style top for outdoor games.  Both kits will need to be labelled with your child’s name so items can be returned to them if lost during the day.
