Statement of Governance Jan 2017

The governors at Richmond Hill Academy are very proud of our school, our staff and our children. Within our impressive building you will find innovative and creative learning, where children are excited and energised by the new opportunities they are presented with each day.

The governing body is made up of 16 dedicated volunteers from a variety of backgrounds and with a broad range of experience, skills and knowledge which they can use to benefit the school. We have professionals, parents and retired people from the local area and from other parts of Leeds, from both the public and private sectors, with experience in sectors such as education, finance, health, managerial and local community.

The governing body exists to establish the strategic direction of the school, ensure accountability of the school and to account for the school financial budget. We aim to make sure that the school has all the necessary regulatory policies and procedure in place and that these are adhered to and reviewed regularly. We also hold the Headteacher and senior management accountable for running the school and we monitor and evaluate the effective use of resources and financing within the school.

The full governing body meets at least 4 times a year and is divided into 2 sub-committees which meet 3 times a year. The Teaching and Learning Committee ensure that there is a high quality of teaching at every level and that children are being given every opportunity to achieve their potential within school. The Business and Finance Committee is responsible for the premises, contracts, health and safety and budgeting of the school.

In addition to this, each governor takes on a particular area of responsibility which they review regularly. These include areas such as Special Educational Needs (SEN), English as an Additional Language (EAL), Inclusion, Health and Safety, Safeguarding and Early Years provision.

The governing body constantly undergoes training in order to help us to perform our role effectively and these include finance, safeguarding, data analysis and strategic thinking training.

We are very proud of our school, staff and pupils and it is a privilege to serve the children of Richmond Hill.

The governing body is currently full but if you are interested in finding out more about the work of the governing body at Richmond Hill or interested in becoming a governor in the future, please feel free to contact me on info@richmondhill.leeds.sch.uk
