Class News

Welcome back! We hope you have had a good break. We are about to set off on more adventures, this time exploring food from across the globe.

In Literacy we will continue to follow the Read Write Inc. programme. We are also having extra phonic sessions to prepare children for the phonics test. We will also link our literacy to our topic lessons to ensure that all children are given wider, extended writing opportunities linked to our theme. To support your child with preparation for the Phonics Screening Test you could access some real and nonsense word games at www.phonicsplay.co.uk

Maths children will be working on number and counting to 100, shape, space and measure, fractions and problem solving in a variety of ways. We will be doing this through practical exploratory and play based activities. .

Year 1 Creative Curriculum

Our Topic this term is ‘World Kitchen’ and will be focusing on London and New Delhi. The children will experience a range of opportunities; exploring food from these countries.

Throughout all our topics we will:

•Create challenging learning opportunities across all areas of the curriculum

•Encourage children’s natural curiosity about the world, and show an interest in geographical communities.

•Provide opportunities for expression and creativity.

•Motivate through unique experiences.

•Embrace ‘learning without limits’ through dedicated child-led learning and risk-taking.

Geography

Our new topic provides an excellent platform for children to enquire about and explore the world around them.

Working at home:
  • Talk to your child about home food experiences.
  • Discuss which foods they like and why?
  • Talk about London landmarks eg London eye, Big Ben etc.
  • Are there any places you would like to visit for a little taste of their cuisine?
  • Where is the food you are eating from?
  • Encourage your child to ask lots of questions and try to find out the answers.
  • Use the internet and visit the local library to find interesting facts which they can then share in their class.

Autumn Term 2

Welcome back! We have an exciting half term ahead! Thank you to everyone who came along to Parents’ evening. It was great to meet so many of you to discuss how your child is getting on at school and how we can work together the best to support their learning so that they can continue making progress throughout Year 1.

All the Y1 classes will have a fantastic Christmas treat! We are going to watch ‘Sleeping Beauty’ in City Variety on 15th December. The pantomime is very engaging and I’m sure everyone will have a lovely time. A letter will be sent home about the trip shortly.

Topic – Crazy climates

The children will be learning about hibernating animals, the days of the week and how the weather and nature change in the different seasons. We will talk about the weather in Africa and compare it to Antarctica.

PE

Our PE days will continue to be on Fridays. With the cold weather approaching, we would advise jogging bottoms, a sweatshirt and trainers for outdoor PE lessons.

Reading books

Reading books will be sent home twice a week, please keep checking your child’s book bag. Could you make sure that you send the books back with a comment about your child’s reading. Please remember that we are unable to change books without a comment.

Many thanks
